The shikara is Dal Lake’s equivalent of a gondola — a long, low wooden boat, cushioned and canopied, paddled silently by a single oarsman. Sunrise rides pass the floating vegetable market in full swing; sunset rides drift past the houseboat colonies as lights come on along the shore.
