Gulmarg earns its name — “Meadow of Flowers” — in summer, but it’s winter that puts it on every skier’s map. Sitting at roughly 2,650 metres, with the Gondola climbing further up Apharwat Peak, Gulmarg gets some of the most reliable snowfall in the Pir Panjal range. The catch is that “winter” here isn’t one uniform season — when you go changes what you actually get.
The safest bet for deep, dependable snow is mid-December through late February. By the second week of December, base areas are usually covered, and January is when Gulmarg is at its most photogenic: waist-deep powder, frozen pine branches, and the Gondola’s second stage running up to Kongdoori and, snow conditions permitting, further to Apharwat. This is also peak season for a reason, so expect higher hotel rates and a livelier (read: busier) Gondola queue, especially around New Year’s and school holiday weeks.
Early season, in late November and the first days of December, is a quieter alternative. Snow cover can be thinner and patchier at lower elevations, so skiing and snowboarding conditions are less consistent, but you’ll get the valley to yourself, better hotel rates, and still-spectacular views once the first proper snowfall lands. It’s a good window if your priority is the scenery and a slower pace rather than guaranteed powder.
March is the wildcard month. Some years bring fresh snow well into March; others see it start melting by mid-month. If you’re set on skiing rather than just seeing snow, treat March as a gamble unless you’re tracking a specific storm forecast.
A few practical notes for whenever you go: book Gondola tickets a day ahead where possible, since queues at the lower station can run long on clear-weather weekends. Dress in proper layers rather than one heavy coat — temperatures swing sharply between the sunny midday slopes and the shaded base village mornings. And if snowsports are the goal, gear rental in Gulmarg itself is easy to arrange on arrival, so there’s no need to haul equipment from home.
